3 Things Bill Gates has Learned From Warren Buffett

This morning I turn on "mobile data" on my phone and got email notification from Gmail. One of the email is comed from Linkedin with subject "Mohd Akmal, learn what Warren Buffett taught Bill Gates"

I click to the link and here are three Bill Gates has learned from Warren over the years:
1. It’s not just about investing.
The first thing people learn from Warren, of course, is how to think about investing. That’s natural, given his amazing track record. Unfortunately, that’s where a lot of people stop, and they miss out on the fact that he has a whole framework for business thinking that is very powerful. For example, he talks about looking for a company’s moat—its competitive advantage—and whether the moat is shrinking or growing. He says a shareholder has to act as if he owns the entire business, looking at the future profit stream and deciding what it’s worth. And you have to be willing to ignore the market rather than follow it, because you want to take advantage of the market’s mistakes—the companies that have been underpriced.
2. Use your platform.
A lot of business leaders write letters to their shareholders, but Warren is justly famous for his. Partly that’s because his natural good humor shines through. Partly it’s because people think it will help them invest better (and they’re right). But it’s also because he’s been willing to speak frankly and criticize things like stock options and financial derivatives. He’s not afraid to take positions, like his stand on raising taxes on the rich, that run counter to his self-interest.
3. Know how valuable your time is.
No matter how much money you have, you can’t buy more time. There are only 24 hours in everyone’s day. Warren has a keen sense of this. He doesn’t let his calendar get filled up with useless meetings. On the other hand, he’s very generous with his time for the people he trusts. He gives his close advisers at Berkshire his phone number, and they can just call him up and he’ll answer the phone.

Brute Force attack against WordPress websites

This morning I have log to control panel to do some php programming and saw this message:

We have monitored on-going brute-force attack against WordPress websites, in order to keep your WordPress website secure, we recommend you do the following:

1. Please change your password for WordPress admin area.

2. Go to your cPanel > File Manager and find your wp-login.php file.

Temporary rename wp-login.php file into wp-login1.php.

You need to change a line in your wp-login.php to reflect the change to the file name. Its line 680 where the form action refers to wp-login.php
Unlike hacks that focus on vulnerabilities in software, a Brute Force Attack aims at being the simplest kind of method to gain access to a site: it tries usernames and passwords, over and over again, until it gets in. Often deemed 'inelegant', they can be very successful when people use passwords like '123456' and usernames like 'admin.'

They are, in short, an attack on the weakest link in any website's security: You.

Due to the nature of these attacks, you may find your server's memory goes through the roof, causing performance problems. This is because the number of http requests (that is the number of times someone visits your site) is so high that servers run out of memory.

This sort of attack is not endemic to WordPress, it happens with every webapp out there, but WordPress is popular and thus a frequent target.

How Protect Yourself

Don't use the 'admin' username
The majority of attacks assume people are using the username 'admin' due to the fact that early versions of WordPress defaulted to this. If you are still using this username, make a new account, transfer all the posts to that account, and change 'admin' to a subscriber (or delete it entirely).

Good Passwords
The goal with your password is to make it hard for other people to guess and hard for a brute force attack to succeed. Many automatic password generators are available that can be used to create secure passwords.

WordPress also features a password strength meter which is shown when changing your password in WordPress. Use this when changing your password to ensure its strength is adequate.

You can use the Enforce Strong Password plugin to force users to set strong passwords.

Things to avoid when choosing a password:
  • Any permutation of your own real name, username, company name, or name of your website.
  • A word from a dictionary, in any language.
  • A short password.
  • Any numeric-only or alphabetic-only password (a mixture of both is best).
  • A strong password is necessary not just to protect your blog content. A hacker who gains access to your administrator account is able to install malicious scripts that can potentially compromise your entire server.
Plugins can be used to limit the number of login attempts made on your site, or block people from accessing wp-admin.

Investment Strategy

Because investing is not a sure thing in most cases, it is much like a game – you don’t know the outcome until the game has been played and a winner has been declared. Anytime you play almost any type of game, you have a strategy. Investing isn't any different – you need an investment strategy.

An investment strategy is basically a plan for investing your money in various types of investments that will help you meet your financial goals in a specific amount of time. Each type of investment contains individual investments that you must choose from. A clothing store sells clothes – but those clothes consist of shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, undergarments, etc. The stock market is a type of investment, but it contains different types of stocks, which all contain different companies that you can invest in.

There are three aspects that can help you create a personal investment strategy:

  • Your personal tolerance for risk
  • Your financial goals
  • Your time horizon

Ask yourself the following questions and make a list so that you can map out your investment strategy.

  • What purpose am I investing for?
  • Am I investing to create a side income stream to supplement my retirement plan?
  • Or am I investing to build a massive sum of money that I can rely on in my “golden years?”
  • Will I need to access this money in the next 1, 5, or 10 years?
  • Am I more interested in passive investing or active investing?

If you haven’t done your research, it can quickly become very confusing – simply because there are so many different types of investments and individual investments to choose from. This is where your strategy, combined with your risk tolerance and investment style all come into play.

If you are new to investments, work closely with a financial planner before making any investments. They will help you develop an investment strategy that will not only fall within the bounds of your risk tolerance and your investment style, but will also help you achieve your financial goals.

Never invest money without having a goal and a strategy for reaching that goal! This is essential. Nobody hands their money over to anyone without knowing what that money is being used for and when they will get it back! If you don’t have a goal, a plan, or a strategy, that is essentially what you are doing! Always start with a goal and a strategy for reaching that goal!

What Is Gout

What Is Gout?

Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis. It occurs when too much uric acid builds up in the body. The buildup of uric acid can lead to:
  • Sharp uric acid crystal deposits in joints, often in the big toe
  • Deposits of uric acid (called tophi) that look like lumps under the skin
  • Kidney stones from uric acid crystals in the kidneys.
For many people, the first attack of gout occurs in the big toe. Often, the attack wakes a person from sleep. The toe is very sore, red, warm, and swollen.
Gout can cause:
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Heat
  • Stiffness in joints.
In addition to the big toe, gout can affect the:
  • Insteps
  • Ankles
  • Heels
  • Knees
  • Wrists
  • Fingers
  • Elbows.
A gout attack can be brought on by stressful events, alcohol or drugs, or another illness. Early attacks usually get better within 3 to 10 days, even without treatment. The next attack may not occur for months or even years.

What Causes Gout?

Gout is caused by the buildup of too much uric acid in the body. Uric acid comes from the breakdown of substances called purines. Purines are found in all of your body’s tissues. They are also in many foods, such as liver, dried beans and peas, and anchovies.
Normally, uric acid dissolves in the blood. It passes through the kidneys and out of the body in urine. But uric acid can build up in the blood when:
  • The body increases the amount of uric acid it makes.
  • The kidneys do not get rid of enough uric acid.
  • A person eats too many foods high in purines.
When uric acid levels in the blood are high, it is called hyperuricemia. Most people with hyperuricemia do not develop gout. But if excess uric acid crystals form in the body, gout can develop.
You are more likely to have gout if you:
  • Have family members with the disease
  • Are a man
  • Are overweight
  • Drink too much alcohol
  • Eat too many foods rich in purines
  • Have an enzyme defect that makes it hard for the body to break down purines
  • Are exposed to lead in the environment
  • Have had an organ transplant
  • Use some medicines such as diuretics, aspirin, cyclosporine, or levodopa
  • Take the vitamin niacin.

How Is Gout Diagnosed?

Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and family history of gout. Signs and symptoms of gout include:
  • Hyperuricemia (high level of uric acid in the blood)
  • Uric acid crystals in joint fluid
  • More than one attack of acute arthritis
  • Arthritis that develops in 1 day, producing a swollen, red, and warm joint
  • Attack of arthritis in only one joint, usually the toe, ankle, or knee.
To confirm a diagnosis of gout, your doctor may draw a sample of fluid from an inflamed joint to look for crystals associated with gout.

How Is Gout Treated?

Doctors use medicines to treat an acute attack of gout, including:
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Corticosteroids, such as prednisone
  • Colchicine, which works best when taken within the first 12 hours of an acute attack.
Sometimes doctors prescribe NSAIDs or colchicine in small daily doses to prevent future attacks. There are also medicines that lower the level of uric acid in the blood.

What Can People With Gout Do to Stay Healthy?

Some things that you can do to stay healthy are:
  • Take the medicines your doctor prescribes as directed.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines and vitamins you take.
  • Plan followup visits with your doctor.
  • Maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Avoid foods that are high in purines, and drink plenty of water.
  • Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight. Ask your doctor about how to lose weight safely. Fast or extreme weight loss can increase uric acid levels in the blood.

What Research Is Being Done on Gout?

Scientists are studying:
  • Which NSAIDs are the most effective treatments for gout
  • Optimal dosages of medications for gout
  • New medicines that safely lower uric acid in the blood and reduce symptoms
  • New therapies that block a chemical called tumor necrosis factor
  • Enzymes that break down purines in the body
  • The role of foods and certain vitamins
  • The role of genetics and environmental factors
  • The interactions of cells involved in acute gout attacks.


Corticosteroids. Powerful anti-inflammatory hormones made naturally in the body or man-made for use as medicine. Injections of corticosteroid drugs are sometimes used to treat inflammation in the shoulder, knee, and other joints.

Diuretics. A type of medication that promotes the formation and output of urine. Diuretics are prescribed to treat the accumulation of excess fluid in bodily tissues that can result from diseases of the kidneys, liver, lungs, or heart. They may also be used to treat high blood pressure or glaucoma, a condition in which pressure builds up inside the eye.

Hemolytic anemia. A form of anemia (deficiency of red blood cells) caused by the destruction of the cells rather than the body’s inability to produce them in adequate numbers.

Hyperuricemia. The presence of elevated levels of uric acid in the blood.

Hypothyroidism. A condition in which the thyroid gland (the gland that makes and stores hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted to energy) is underactive. Without treatment, this condition can result in fatigue, weight gain, other serious medical problems, and even death.

NSAIDs. A class of medications, available over the counter or with a prescription, that ease pain and inflammation.

Podagra. Gout in the big toe.

Pseudogout. A condition often mistaken for gout that results from the deposit of calcium phosphate crystals (not uric acid crystals as in gout) in the joints and other tissues. This condition is also called chondrocalcinosis.

Psoriasis. An autoimmune disease characterized by a red scaly rash that is often located over the surfaces of the elbows, knees, and scalp, and around or in the ears, navel, genitals, or buttocks. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of people with psoriasis develop an associated arthritis referred to as psoriatic arthritis.

Purines. Found in the DNA and RNA within the nuclei of cells, purines are part of all human tissue and are found in many foods, especially those high in protein.

Synovial fluid. The slippery fluid produced by the synovium (joint lining) to lubricate the joints.

Tophi. Nodular masses of uric acid crystals that sometimes form in the soft tissue of people with chronic gout. Although tophi are most common around the fingers, elbows, and big toe, they can occur in virtually any part of the body. (The singular is tophus.)

Uric acid. A substance that results from the breakdown of purines, which are part of all human tissue and are found in many foods.


Job Search: How to write cover letter

Your covering letter of application is the first of three documents used during the job search process. Many applicants underestimate the power of a well-written covering letter, presuming the recruiter will only focus their attention on the resume. In today's working environment, a recruiter's workload has increased dramatically by having to complete a higher number of recruiting assignments and screen an increasing number of applicants. The bottom line is that the recruiter is a very busy person, under constant pressure to complete assignments within a standard time frame. This is where the power of a well-written covering letter has effect. It is the first document a recruiter will read and it is here you must sell yourself and convince the recruiter to look further. You must convince the recruiter that your resume is worth their valuable time to read. It is your personal statement, an invitation to look further.

How to structure a covering letter
  • Your letter must not exceed one page.
  • Keep your letter simple and ensure your paragraphs and sentences are short and concise.
  • Use bullet points to highlight key achievements and accountabilities.
  • Ensure your achievements and accountabilities address the key selection criteria.
  • Avoid using phrases that give the impression you are not positive.
  • Don't oversell yourself and try to reflect balanced thinking.
  • Review and redraft your letter until you are confident with it.
  • Check for spelling mistakes and ensure it is correctly addressed.
  • Use good quality stationary and prepare your letter on a word package. Ensure it is printed on a good quality printer.
  • Your introduction should be your strongest selling point, referring to your greatest achievement.
  • Ask for a personal meeting as opposed to an interview as your concluding statement.

Here are some tips
  • Don't use colour stationary, it may give the impression you are overselling.
  • Address the letter to the person responsible for the recruiting assignment. If the advertisement does not state their name, ring and find out.
  • Your strongest selling points must reflect the key selection criteria
  • Don't mention you are unemployed or have been made redundant. It may reduce your chances of being interviewed.
  • Don't state the obvious when writing your letter: e.g. please find my resume enclosed or I am applying for the position of..

What You Should Do Before Invest

Before you consider investing in any type of market, you should really take a long hard look at your current situation. Pull your credit report. If you’ve set aside $25,000 to invest, but you have $25,000 worth of bad credit, you are better off cleaning up the credit first!

For instance, high interest credit cards are not necessary. Pay them off and get rid of them. If you have high interest outstanding loans, pay them off as well. If nothing else, exchange the high interest credit card for one with lower interest and refinance high interest loans with loans that are lower interest. You may have to use some of your investment funds to take care of these matters, but in the long run, you will see that this is the wisest course of action.

Get yourself into good financial shape – and then enhance your financial situation with sound investments.

It doesn’t make sense to start investing funds if your bank balance is always running low or if you are struggling to pay your monthly bills. Your investment dollars will be better spent to rectify adverse financial issues that affect you each day.

11. Handle your finance like adult.
  • Do not handle money like four-years-old which usually they insist on spending their allowance the same day they receive it. Saving or creating an investment fund is the furthest thing from their mind. If you handle your money like a four year-old, you will have the savings account of a four-year-old.

Tan Sri Anthony Francis Fernandes "Tony Fernandes"

Tan Sri Anthony Francis "Tony" Fernandes ( Twitter: tonyfernandes‎ ) , born 30 April 1964; is a Malaysian Indian entrepreneur. He is the founder of Tune Air Sdn. Bhd., who introduced the first budget no-frills airline, AirAsia, to Malaysians with the tagline "Now everyone can fly". Fernandes managed to turn AirAsia, a failing government-linked commercial airline, into a highly successful budget airline public-listed company.

He was also instrumental in lobbying the then-Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in mid-2003, to propose the idea of open skies agreements with neighboring Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. As a result, these nations have granted landing rights to AirAsia and other discount carriers.

Fernandes was born in Kuala Lumpur to an Indian father (a physician, originally from Goa) and Portuguese-Eurasian mother, Ena Dorothy Fernandes of Malacca, Malaysia.  Tony was admitted as Associate Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 1991 and became Fellow Member in 1996.

Upon his return to Malaysia, he became the youngest managing director of Warner Music (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. As well as being an accountant, Fernandes is an amateur guitarist and also has achieved grade 8 piano which is where his musical inclination lies.

He subsequently became the South East Asian regional vice-president for Warner Music Group from 1992-2001. When Time Warner Inc announced its merger with America Online Inc., Fernandes left to pursue his dream of starting a budget no-frills airline. However, his application for a license from the Malaysian government was rejected.

Instead of starting from scratch, Mahathir advised Fernandes to buy an existing airline instead. AirAsia, the heavily-indebted subsidiary of the Malaysian government-owned conglomerate, DRB-Hicom, was quickly losing money. Fernandes says his timing was in fact perfect: after 11 September 2001, aircraft leasing costs fell 40%. Also, airline lay-offs meant experienced staff were readily available. Fernandes estimates about 50 per cent of the travelers on Asia’s budget airlines are first-time flyers.  The company grew from two planes in 2002 to a fleet of 86 aircraft flying 30 million people around the world.

After the success of Air Asia's short-haul flights he expanded into long haul journeys with a new airline, Air Asia X.  The result was two separate companies, one dedicated to low cost short-haul flights, the other focusing on long-haul routes. Despite this, the two airlines utilize a similar modus operandi: efficiency is key to keeping up with demand and ensuring a healthy profit-margin.
In 2007, Tony Fernandes started a hotel chain, Tune Hotels, based on the no-frills concept. The first Tune Hotel was opened in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Triglyceride?...what is it?

What is Triglyceride
Triglyceride (triacylglycerol, TAG or triacylglyceride) is an ester composed of a glycerol bound to three fatty acids. It is the main constituent of vegetable oil and animal fats.
Most natural fats contain a complex mixture of individual triglycerides. Because of this, they melt over a broad range of temperatures. Cocoa butter is unusual in that it is composed of only a few triglycerides, one of which contains palmitic, oleic, and stearic acids, in order of concentration.

In humans, triglyceride synthesis occurs mainly in the liver and also in the adipose tissue, in small quantities. Excess carbohydrates are converted to fatty acids and then to triglycerides, which are transported to the adipose tissues through blood.

Normal range of triglyceride levels
Below is the normal range of fasting triglyceride levels, in children and adults, as per the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), USA.

Some effects of high triglyceride levels
High triglyceride levels can contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, which is a narrowing of the arteries. Elevated numbers of triglycerides can cause plaque to gradually accumulate along the walls of the blood vessels. Over time, this causes the arteries to narrow and even harden, creating resistance in the flow of blood through the arteries and causing the heart to work harder than normal.

Coronary Artery Disease
More so a complication of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease is a narrowing of the arteries nearest your heart. Since high triglycerides levels play a role in atherosclerosis, they're considered a contributing factor in this condition, maintains the American Heart Association.

Carotid Artery Disease
High triglyceride levels can also contribute to the development of carotid artery disease. Much like coronary artery disease, this condition is a result of plaque accumulating along the arterial walls. But instead of collecting in the arteries nearest the heart, the fatty deposits narrow the arteries nearest the brain. Due to the location of plaque build up, it increases the risk of a transient ischemic attack or stroke, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Peripheral Artery Disease
Similar to both coronary artery and carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease is also a narrowing of the arteries. However, the narrowing is located in the arteries along the outer extremities, such as the arms and legs. It can cause some cramping, pain, numbness or weakness in the affected limb.

According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, high levels of triglycerides may contribute to pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas. This may cause some pain or tenderness along the abdomen as well as some nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. If inflammation is left untreated, a person may experience malnutrition, infection or even kidney failure.

Foods That Raise Triglyceride Levels
•Sugar: Simple sugars, such as fructose, are the worst culprits. It is easy to eat too much fructose as it seems to bypass bodily satiety signals. This leads to weight gain and the development of insulin resistance. Fructose is most often found in high-fructose corn syrup. Read the labels and watch out for corn syrup, honey, sucrose, glucose, fructose, honey or maltose listed as one of the first ingredients. Minimize your consumption of foods such as candy, ice cream, flavored sweetened yogurts, sweetened juices and other drinks, cereals, honey, molasses, jams, jellies, and canned fruit. Good oil choices are olive oil, canola oil, and peanut oil.

•Refined grains or starchy foods: Try to avoid enriched or bleached white bread, wheat bread, or pasta. Also avoid sugary cereals, instant rice, bagels, pizza, pastries, pies, cookies, and cakes. Starchy foods include high-starch vegetables, such as potatoes. Instead, choose foods with 100% whole grains, long-grain rice instead of instant rice, and non-starchy vegetables.

•Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption causes the liver to increase triglyceride production.

•High-calorie foods: Excess calories increase triglyceride levels. Pay attention to the calories you consume and try to avoid eating more calories than you can burn though physical activity
How to manage your triglyceride level
Here are some guidelines to help you manage your triglyceride level:
  • Moderate exercise on five or more days each week can help lower triglyceride levels.
  • Losing 5%-10% of your weight can lower triglycerides. People with a healthy weight are more likely to have normal triglyceride levels. Belly fat is associated with higher levels.
  • Reducing saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol in your diet can improve triglyceride levels and help manage cholesterol. Eating less carbohydrates in your diet will also help lower triglyceride levels.
  • Drinking alcohol can raise triglyceride levels. Some studies show that drinking more than one drink a day for women or two for men can raise triglyceride levels by a lot. Some people with high triglycerides may need to cut out alcohol entirely.

I do not pretend to be an authority on women's fashion; however, I have always found that employers seek dress standards to reflect modern corporate attitudes.
  • There has always been a debate whether it is appropriate to bring a bag or brief case to an interview. In my opinion it does add a touch of professionalism if you do. However make it work for you, if you like to take notes during an interview, like I do then it acts as a working tool and therefore is justified as an accessory.
  • Address the recruiter on a first name basis unless advised otherwise. Don't be shy to use the first name whilst answering an interview question; it adds a personal touch to your response. For example; "Julie, I have always felt that the best way to handle difficult employees is to listen carefully to what they are saying and sympathise with them."
  • Here comes the grateful exit! Shake hands firmly on conclusion of the interview, smile and thank the recruiter for their time in meeting with you by addressing them in their first name.
  • The recruiter will most likely show you the way out, be careful of small talk again. Don't be negative, show that you enjoyed the interview experience and reinforce that it was a pleasure to attend the interview.

3.)    Do you have more shoes and clothes in your closet than you could ever possibly wear?

4.)    Do you own every new gadget before it has time to collect dust on a retailer’s shelf?

If you answered “yes” to any two of the above questions, you are an impulse spender and indulge yourself in retail therapy.
