What is your job? Programmer...mmm

I started my job as programmer in Dec 1997 with system integrator company. My problem was when I went back to home town,  people ask me what I was doing in Kuala Lumpur. My hometown is in Perlis. The smallest state in Malaysia.

I had difficulty to explain to them what is programmer. Then I told them that I am in IT field. Then they ask me whether I can fix their PC or not. For some of them IT field is related to PC only.
For that time, computer programmer was not glamour as engineer or teacher. If you are teacher or government servant, they will give more respect. If you are single guy, they will recommend their daughter to you to be your wife.

Now, I am still programmer with "analyst" in front.  One of the reason I am still programmer because I feel that I am quite introvert person. I enjoy debugging and fixing software bugs.
I don't know until when I will be programmer; may be forever until retire.

Malaysian NRIC Replacement

During lunch, I had accompanied my wife to Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur National Registration Department(NRD) for NRIC or MyKad replacement. They are six peoples in queue and three peoples at counter. The process only take less than an hour. We can collect the MyKad next two weeks. We can collect the card at Putrajaya, NRD next 24 hours if urgently need it. NRD charged my wife RM10 for replacement.

My wife want to replace her MyKad because her picture on MyKad is quiet blur and have problem when deal with bank or other personal matter which  involve MyKad .

She have tried apply through online but rejected because they cannot extract her image on database. This is because her picture is in old format. Last year, I managed to apply for replacement through myeg.com.my.

Rule of 78: What??? After one year payment why my loan principle not much different?

On first April last year you have bought a second hand car. You have make car loan for $50000 with 7 years financing period. Interest rate for that loan is 5%. Your monthly installment is $803.57.
On 1st April this year, suddenly you want to make full settlement because your company give you 24months salary bonus. You have checked with your car loan bank and find out you have pay $45, 327.73 for full settlement.

Instead of check with your car loan bank, you also can estimate it using online full settlement calculator available in internet, In this case I will use online full settlement calculator from http://loanstreet.com.my.

The typical bank loan or Islamic financing using "Rule of 78" to calculate prepayment schedule and early  settlement rebate. Why it calls "rule of 78", it is sum of month number of the year  ( 1+2+3...+11+12 ) is 78. The earliest official use of the Rule of 78s to calculate the unearned portion of a loan’s finance charge was in Indiana in 1935.

You will  paying more interest in early repayment. From calculator above total rebate is RM12529.41. In Islamic financing, we call this rebate as Ibra'. The rebate above actually balance interest you should paid from settlement date until end of tenure.

Total rebate based on Rule of 78 formula is =  f *( k(k+1) )/ n(n+1) ),
where  f = total agreed finance charges; k = number of months paying off early( remaining months to pay); n = total term of loan in months.

Early settlement amount,
= Initial loan amount - instalments already paid + total interest - interest rebate (rule of 78) + penalty (a percentage of the interest rebate).

From repayment schedule above which I generate from http://www.drcalculator.com/calc/rule78.cgi , we can straightway pick interest rebate from "Interest left to Pay" on month 13.

The magic number in the table calculate using formula
=  ( total term of loan in months/ 2 ) * ( total term of loan in months  + 1 )
=( 84/2) * (84+1)
= 3570

This number will use to calculate interest portion for every month by using following formula:
= total interest * ( ( total term of loan in months- total month instalments already paid ) /  magic number )

For first month the interest paid is,

= 17500 * ( ( 84-0 )/3570 )
=411.76

This is why when you do early settlement too early, the settlement amount not much different from your  total loan.

This is also why bank so happy when you refinance or overlapped the amount. When you this, the interest portion will back same as month one.

For more information you can refer following web sites:

I am a racist!!!

Yes, I am a racist. I believe you are racist too if you are Malaysian. The different from you and me is level of racism.

Racist definition from Dictionary.com  :
noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Since I was child, I have expose to racist environment. I have been introduce racial base politic party and racial base primary school. I have heard "apartheid" in world news on local TV channel and newspaper.

I think we are became racist because we want secure our race. We want our race become dominant. Everybody want to control economy and politic.

Certain peoples, they  became racist because of life experiences. May be their parent or relative have or themselves have been victim of race bullying.

Racist is good for me if your intention is to help your race to develop.

To moving forward we must put racism aside. We must learn from each others. We must unite to develop our nation. If our nation not developed how come your race can move forward. We must avoid from other "outsider" to take advantage using our racism.

Islamic Financing vs Conventional Loan

Situation: Ali want need money $5000 to buy motorcycle. He got two best friend, Ahmad and Jefry which offer to give him money with some condition.

Jefry said: I will give you $5000 and you need to pay back to me $6000 within two years.

Ahmad said: I will buy the motorcycle for you and will sell back to you with price $6000. You can pay it within two years.

In this situation Jefry is offering money. The $1000 extra is called interest. This is Conventional Loan.

Meanwhile, Ahmad is offering Motorcycle (asset) which he bought with price $5000 to Ali. After he sell back the motorcycle to Ali, he will get profit $1000. This is Islamic Financing.

Islamic Financing transaction is based on asset and agreed profit.
Conventional Loan is based on money and agreed interest.

Both transaction have contract or agreement to secure the payments. In Islamic Finacing, the agreement or contract is called Akad.

This is just a very basic term of Islamic Financing. For more details you can learn from expert or more knowledgeable person.

About OrphanCARE

OrphanCARE is a non-profit non-governmental organisation established in 2008, under the patronage of HRH Sultanah Pahang, Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom. It aims to give every orphan and abandoned baby a chance to feel love and care in the security of a family in accordance to our tagline “Every child needs a family”.

We work closely with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development to expedite the adoption process whereby abandoned babies and children in orphanages are quickly matched up and placed with suitable parents.

There is a disturbingly high number of orphans and unwanted babies placed in orphanages which is surprising considering that there are many couples who wish to adopt. OrphanCARE is perhaps the only NGO seeking to reduce the number of children in orphanages. Most orphanages are often ill-resourced to provide children the kind of love, attention and security that could be offered by families. Orphans and children who spend large parts of their childhood in orphanages often grow up with low self esteem resulting in behavioral problems, delinquency and poor academic performance. Many leave orphanages at the age of 18 without a family support system making it difficult for them to make a good start in life.
OrphanCARE aims to help change society’s mindset towards orphans, recognizing that children should not be left permanently in orphanages which should really only be ‘transit points’ before they are placed with families who can bring them up in a proper family structure.
There are an increasing numbers of babies left in waste dumps, bushes, drains, public toilets among other places. Unwed mothers or victims of rape who abandon their babies are mostly young and come under pressure arising from social stigma and legal implications, compounded by a sense of hopelessness due to not knowing whom to turn to.

Our baby hatch, the first such facility in Malaysia, was set up to discourage women from abandoning their babies by providing the assurance that the babies would be placed in good homes.
OrphanCARE has a database of screened adoptive parents with complete background profiles and work with other Government departments, NGOs and members of the public to provide suitable families for orphans and abandoned babies. At OrphanCARE we believe “Every child needs a family”.

Today in 1976

Today is my birthday. 37 years old.

Result from http://whathappenedinmybirthyear.com/:

"In 1976, the world was a different place.
There was no Google yet. Or Yahoo. Or Stumbleupon, for that matter.
In 1976, the year of your birth, the top selling movie was Rocky. People buying the popcorn in the cinema lobby had glazing eyes when looking at the poster.
Remember, that was before there were DVDs. People were indeed watching movies in the cinema, and not downloading them online. Imagine the packed seats, the laughter, the excitement, the novelty. And mostly all of that without 3D computer effects.

Do you know who won the Oscars that year? The academy award for the best movie went to Rocky. The Oscar for best foreign movie that year went to Black and White in Color. The top actor was Peter Finch for his role as Howard Beale in Network. The top actress was Faye Dunaway for her role as Diana Christensen in Network. The best director? John G. Avildsen for Rocky.
In the year 1976, the time when you arrived on this planet, books were still popularly read on paper, not on digital devices. Trees were felled to get the word out. The number one US bestseller of the time was Trinity by Leon Uris. Oh, that's many years ago. Have you read that book?
Have you heard of it? Look at the cover!
In 1976... the first commercial Concorde flight takes off. The trial against jailed members of the Red Army Faction begins in Stuttgart, West Germany. The United States vetoes a United Nations resolution that calls for an independent Palestinian state. Western Sahara declares independence. General Murtala Mohammed of Nigeria is assassinated in a military coup. The first 4.6 miles of the Washington Metro subway system opens. Apple Computer Company is formed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. As a measure to curb population growth, the minimum age for marriage in India is raised to 21 years for men and 18 years for women. The Eurovision Song Contest 1976 is won by Brotherhood of Man, representing the United Kingdom, with their song Save Your Kisses for Me. The chimes of Big Ben stopped when part of the chiming mechanism disintegrated through metal fatigue. The Viking 2 spacecraft lands at Utopia Planitia on Mars, taking the first close-up color photos of the planet's surface. The video game of the day was Breakout.
That was the world you were born into. Since then, you and others have changed it.
The Nobel prize for Literature that year went to Saul Bellow. The Nobel Peace prize went to Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan. The Nobel prize for physics went to Burton Richter and Samuel Chao Chung Ting from the United States for their pioneering work in the discovery of a heavy elementary particle of a new kind. The sensation this created was big. But it didn't stop the planets from spinning, on and on, year by year. Years in which you would grow bigger, older, smarter, and, if you were lucky, sometimes wiser. Years in which you also lost some things. Possessions got misplaced. Memories faded. Friends parted ways. The best friends, you tried to hold on. This is what counts in life, isn't it?

The 1970s were indeed a special decade. Women's liberation continued. The hippie culture faded. There was an opposition to the Vietnam war, and nuclear weapons. The environmentalist movement began. Tom Wolfe coined the decade the "Me decade" due to a new self-awareness. Mao Zedong died and the market began to liberate in China. There was an oil crisis. After the first oil shock, gasoline was rationed in many countries. In Eastern Europe, Soviet-style command economies begin showing signs of stagnation. The Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, witness the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes by Palestinian Arab terrorists. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. The Who, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Bee Gees, Abba and others play their music. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all die at the age of 27. The space mission Apollo 13 nearly ends in disaster. Egypt signed the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. There was a revolution in Iran. The world sees its first general microprocessor. The C programming language makes its debut. Consumer video games show up on the scene. Microwave ovens become commercially available. Margaret Thatcher was victorious in the UK elections.

Do you remember the movie that was all the rage when you were 15? The Silence of the Lambs. Do you still remember the songs playing on the radio when you were 15? Maybe it was I've Been Thinking About You by Londonbeat. Were you in love? Who were you in love with, do you remember?

In 1976, 15 years earlier, a long time ago, the year when you were born, the song Don't Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John and Kiki Dee topped the US charts. Do you know the lyrics? Do you know the tune? Sing along.
You take the weight off me
Honey when you knock on my door
I gave you my key
Nobody knows it
When I was down
I was your clown
Nobody knows it
Right from the start
I gave you my heart
I gave you my heart
...
There's a kid outside, shouting, playing. It doesn't care about time. It doesn't know about time. It shouts and it plays and thinks time is forever. You were once that kid.
When you were 9, the movie Return to Oz was playing. When you were 8, there was The Karate Kid. When you were 7, there was a Disney movie out called The Fox and the Hound. Does this ring a bell?
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... it's 1976. There's TV noise coming from the second floor. Someone turned up the volume way too high. The sun is burning from above. These were different times. The show playing on TV is The Bionic Woman. The sun goes down. Someone switches channels. There's Laverne & Shirley on now. That's the world you were born in.
Progress, year after year. Do you wonder where the world is heading towards? The technology available today would have blown your mind in 1976. Do you know what was invented in the year you were born? The Gore-Tex Fabric. Perpendicular Recording. Polyphony.
We better keep all remembering this land now.
This land full of people bent
On gettin' their kicks Lord, Lord.
I think we all better pick up the sticks.
In 1976.
...
That's from the song 1976 by Grand Funk Railroad.

In 1976, a new character entered the world of comic books: Captain Britain. Bang! Boom! But that's just fiction, right? In the real world, in 1976, Melissa Joan Hart was born. And Scott Caan. Colin Farrell, too. And you, of course. Everyone an individual. Everyone special. Everyone taking a different path through life.
It's 2013.
The world is a different place.
What path have you taken? "
